Old Loft Insulation Removed Across Liverpool

When loft insulation has gone flat, got wet, been soiled or simply needs to come out before other work, laying more on top doesn't fix it. We strip the old insulation out of homes across Liverpool, bag it in the loft, carry it down under dust sheets, vacuum the loft back to the joists and take the waste away. If you want the loft insulated again, we can refill it to 270mm as part of the same job.

In short
Removal-only clear-outs in Liverpool start from £499. Send a couple of photos from the loft hatch through the quote form and we come back with a written price and a date. You pay the balance at the end of the job, once you have checked the loft.

Lofts in Liverpool

Liverpool has some of the densest Victorian terraces in the country, in Anfield, Walton and Kensington, with bigger period houses in Aigburth and Allerton. Many terraced lofts have tiny hatches and decades of dust in the insulation, and they are cleared by hand.

Type of homeWhere in LiverpoolWhat we usually find

Liverpool is about 32 miles from our Cheshire base as the crow flies. We cover it the same way as everywhere else: photos first, a written price, then a date.

When Do You Need Loft Insulation Removal in Liverpool?

Topping up is fine when the existing insulation is clean, dry and just too thin. These are the situations where it has to come out first:

Worn Out

  • Flattened: old fibreglass slumps to a fraction of its depth over the decades and stops doing much.
  • Grey with dust: years of dust settle into it, and every time you go up there it ends up in the house.
  • Layered over the years: rolls laid in different directions on top of each other hide what is underneath and make the depth hard to judge.

Damp or Contaminated

  • Roof leaks: wet insulation stops working and holds moisture against the ceiling and timbers.
  • Condensation and mould: often a ventilation problem; see condensation prevention.
  • Rats, mice or birds: soiled insulation can't be cleaned where it lies. That is a separate clean-up, covered on our page on rodent-damaged insulation in Liverpool.

Clearing for Other Work

  • Loft boarding: raised boarding or storage platforms go in more cleanly over cleared joists.
  • Loft conversions: the builder needs the joists clear before work starts.
  • Roof, wiring and plumbing work: easier and safer with the old insulation out of the way.
  • Insulation stuffed into the eaves: can block the airflow the roof needs, so it is pulled back or removed.

What Our Removal Service Covers in Liverpool

Full Strip-Out

Every layer of old insulation lifted out, including the rolls laid over the top in later years.

Eaves and Awkward Corners

Insulation pulled out from the eaves, around tanks and from behind pipework, not just the easy middle of the loft.

Vacuumed Back to the Joists

An industrial extractor clears the dust and debris left between the joists once the bulk is out.

Waste Taken Away

Bagged waste taken away by van or skip, with a waste transfer note. See our disposal guide.

Clearing for Boarding or Conversions

Removal-only jobs so the joists are clear for boarding, a conversion or roof work.

Refill to 270mm

If the loft is staying as a loft, new insulation laid to 270mm. See insulation replacement and 270mm installation.

How We Remove Loft Insulation in Liverpool

1

Photos and a Written Price

Send a couple of photos from the loft hatch through the quote form. We come back with a written price and a date.

2

Protect the Route

Dust sheets go down on the landing, stairs and hallway before anything is moved.

3

Bag It in the Loft

The old insulation is lifted and bagged up in the loft, so it is never carried loose through the house.

4

Vacuum Back to the Joists

With the bulk out, the loft is vacuumed with an industrial extractor to clear the remaining dust and debris.

5

Take It Away

The bags are carried out and taken away for disposal, by skip on bigger jobs.

6

Check It Together

You see the cleared loft, or the refilled one if you went for new insulation, and get photos. The balance is paid at the end of the job.

Keeping Your House Clean

How we work inside your home
  • Dust sheets: down on every floor we walk through, before work starts.
  • Bagged at the hatch: insulation goes into heavy-duty bags in the loft, not down the stairs loose.
  • Masks and overalls: worn in the loft, and taken off before we come back through the house.
  • Vacuumed route: the landing and stairs are cleaned before we leave.

What Loft Insulation Removal Costs in Liverpool

Removal-only clear-outs start from £499. No two lofts hold the same amount of old material, so every job is written up from photos rather than charged at a flat rate. These are the things that move the price:

FactorWhy it mattersEffect on the price
Loft sizeBigger lofts hold more insulation and take longer to bagThe main driver
Depth and layersTwo or three layers laid over the years can double the volumeMore bags, sometimes a skip
AccessSmall hatches, low pitches, trussed roofs and boarded areas slow the workMore labour time
ConditionDamp or mouldy insulation is heavier and messier to handleMore time and care
Waste volumeLarge clear-outs need a skip rather than van loadsSkip size added
RefillNew insulation to 270mm if the loft is staying as a loftPriced on top, optional
Paying for the job
The balance is paid at the end of the job, before we leave, once you have checked the loft. Someone needs to be at the property to let us in and look over the work.

Removal Only, or Remove and Refill?

Your situationWhat we would usually do
Loft conversion bookedRemoval only, so the builder starts with clear joists
Boarding or storage platform going inRemoval, then new insulation under the boards if there is room
Roof repairs plannedRemoval before the work, refill once the roof is sound
Old insulation flattened or dusty, nothing else plannedRemove and refill to 270mm in the same job
Damp or mouldy insulationRemove, find and fix the cause, then refill once dry
Before anyone touches it: if your loft has loose grey-brown or gold granules rather than rolls, it may be vermiculite, which can contain asbestos. Don't disturb it; get it tested first. We don't remove vermiculite or asbestos, which is a licensed specialist's job.

What Happens to the Old Insulation

Old loft insulation can't go in household bins, and a typical loft fills far more bags than a car boot will take. We bag it in the loft, take it away by van or skip, and give you a waste transfer note. Our guide to disposing of old loft insulation explains the rules if you are weighing up doing it yourself.

Liverpool Loft Insulation Removal FAQs

Do you cover Liverpool?

Yes. We cover the whole of Liverpool, including Anfield, Walton and Everton, and work across the rest of the UK. Send a couple of photos from the loft hatch and we will come back with a written price and a date.

How much does loft insulation removal cost in Liverpool?

Removal-only clear-outs start from £499. The price depends on the size of the loft, how deep the old insulation is, how many layers there are, how easy the loft is to get into and how much waste there is to take away, so we price every job from photos.

Can you just remove the insulation and not replace it?

Yes. Removal only is common before boarding, a loft conversion or roof work. The rooms below will lose heat until the loft is insulated again, so if nothing else is planned we would normally refill it to 270mm as part of the same job.

What happens to the old insulation?

It is bagged in the loft, carried down through the house and taken away for disposal, by skip on bigger jobs, with a waste transfer note. It does not go in your household bins.

How long does loft insulation removal take?

Most lofts are cleared in a day. A very large loft, or a clear-out followed by a refill, can take two. Someone needs to be at the property to let us in and check the loft before we leave.

Can I take old loft insulation to the tip myself?

Some council tips take small amounts of loft insulation and some do not, and most loft clear-outs are far more than a car boot. Check with your council first; our guide to disposing of old loft insulation covers the options.
